1882 - "An Gaodhal, Leabhar-aithris míosamhal tabhartha chum an Teanga Ghaedhilge a chosnadh agus a shaorthugadh, agus chum Féin-riaghla Cinidh na hÉireann."  /  The Gael, a Monthly Journal devoted to the Preservation and Cultivation of the Irish Language and the Self-Rule of the Irish Race."
 
1884 - cuspóir do Chumann Carad Na Gaeilge Bhrúiclinn é féin:  "This society shall have for its object the preservation and extension of the Irish as a spoken language."  / 1884 - the goal for Brooklyn Philo-Celtic itself (m'aistriúchán): "Beidh mar chuspóir ag an gCumann seo caomhnú agus fairsingiú na Gaeilge mar theanga labhartha."
 
1886, scríobh Ó Lócháin, "Ní chun mionscrúdú a dhéanamh ar an teanga féin a bunaíodh 'An Gaodhal' ach chun an teanga a chraobhscaoileadh agus a chaomhnú."  /    " 'An Gael' was not founded to do a minute study on the language itself but to broadcast and protect the language."

Anois go bhfuil ballraíocht arís ag Cumann Carad Na Gaeilge Nua Eabhraic ó 7 Deireadh Fomháir 2004, caithfimid smaoineamh ar chuspóirí.  /  Now that the New York Philo-Celtic Society again has a membership since 7 October 2004, we have to think about goals.

Ní féidir liom aon fhianaise a fháil go raibh.  /  I can't find any evidence that they had.
 
Bhunaigh Mícheál Ó Lócháin an chéad  "Philo-Celtic Class" i Scoil Mhuire i mBrúiclinn i 1872 chun Gaeilge a mhúineadh.  Tá sé seo roimh go raibh an Cumann ann.  /   Mícheál Ó Lócháin founded the first "Philo-Celtic Class" in St. Mary's School in Brooklyn in 1872 to teach Irish.  This is before the Society existed.

"THIS SOCIETY is instituted to promote the study of the Irish Language; to PRESERVE it as a spoken tongue; to encourage the study and dissemination of IRISH LITERATURE; to cultivate and practice the NATIONAL MUSIC OF IRELAND, and to establish in the City of New York an IRISH LITERARY INSTITUTE."
 
Ach caithfimid fanacht go dtí 1881 roimh gur féidir linn feiceáil go raibh Ó Lócháin ag iarraidh an fhadhb a cheartú (.i., ganntanas cuspóra shoiléir) leis a iris nua dhátheangach "An Gaodhal".  /  But we have to wait until 1881 before we can see that Ó Lócháin was trying to correct the problem (i.e., lack of a clear goal) with his new bi-lingual magazine "The Gael" (The Gaelic Irish Person).

Ag am Uí Lócháin, ní raibh ach meán cumarsáide amháin ar fáil - an cló-phreas.  Ach inniu, tá a lán meáin chumarsáide a chur chun cinn aon chuspóir atá fiúntach. /  At the time of Ó Lócháin, there was only one media available - the printing press.  But today, there are a lot of media to put towards success any worthwhile goal.
 
Ach ar dtús, lig dúinn plé an cuspóir nó na cuspóirí atá ag teastáil uaibh.  Tiocfaidh straitéis agus taicticí i ndiaidh sin.  /  But first, let's discuss the goal or goals you want.  Strategy and tactics will follow that.
