THE ORIGINAL GOALS IN FULL
A chairde,
Tuigim ónár dtráchtaí an tseachtain seo gur
mhaith libh tógáil ar ár mbun-chuspóirí mar ar sholéirigh Mícheál
Ó Lócháin iad sa tréimhse ó 1872 suas go dtí 1896, ní amháin go
1886. / I understand from our discussions this week that you
want to build upon our original goals as Mícheál Ó Lócháin
clarified them in the period from 1872 to 1896, not just to 1886.
Seo daoibh iad go léir ón dtréimhse sin, go
bhfios dom: / Here they all are from that period, as far as I
know:
1872 - múineadh
1881 - cuspóir do AN GAODHAL (iris
oifigúil do Chumann Carad Na Gaeilge Bhrúiclinn ag an am sin):
"teanga na hÉireann a chosnughadh, a haithbheodhughadh agus a
chleachdughadh a measg Clann na nGaodhal." / 1881 - goal
for AN GAODHAL (official magazine of the Brooklyn Philo-Celtic Society
at that time): "the language of Ireland to protect, to revive,
and to use amongst the Children of the Gaeil."
1882 - "An Gaodhal, Leabhar-aithris míosamhal
tabhartha chum an Teanga Ghaedhilge a chosnadh agus a shaorthugadh, agus
chum Féin-riaghla Cinidh na hÉireann." / The Gael, a
Monthly Journal devoted to the Preservation and Cultivation of the Irish
Language and the Self-Rule of the Irish Race."
1884 - cuspóir do Chumann Carad Na Gaeilge
Bhrúiclinn é féin: "This society shall have for its object the
preservation and extension of the Irish as a spoken language." /
1884 - the goal for Brooklyn Philo-Celtic itself (m'aistriúchán): "Beidh
mar chuspóir ag an gCumann seo caomhnú agus fairsingiú na Gaeilge
mar theanga labhartha."
1886, scríobh Ó Lócháin, "Ní chun
mionscrúdú a dhéanamh ar an teanga féin a bunaíodh 'An Gaodhal' ach
chun an teanga a chraobhscaoileadh agus a chaomhnú." /
" 'An Gael' was not founded to do a minute study on the language itself
but to broadcast and protect the language."
Agus i 1896, ag plé ar ghluaiseacht na Gaeilge
i Meiriceá (ar thosaigh sé le Cumann Carad Na Gaeilge), dúirt Ó Lócháin:
/ And in 1896, discussing the Irish language movement in America (which he
started with the Philo-Celtic Society), Ó Lócháin said:
".... the object of the Gaelic movement is
- and has been - the revival and the reintroduction of the Gaelic as the
spoken language of Ireland with English as an accompaniement."
Mar is féidir linn feiceáil, baineann bun-chuspóirí
ár gCumainn leis an teanga amháin, cé go dtagraíonn Mícheál "Féin-riaghla
Cinidh na hÉireann" freisin i comhthéacs na irise. /
As we see, the original goals of our Society deal only with the Irish
language, although Mícheál also references "self-rule of the Irish
Race" in the context of the magazine.
Mar sin, táimid ag obair ar chonas na cuspóirí
seo a thabhairt anuas go dtí an lá inniu i dteanga ár lae inniu. Idir
an dá linn, mar a d'inis sibh dom, biodh a fhios ag éinne le suim inár
n-eagraíocht, go mbainfidh eachtraí agus gníomhartha ár gCumann le
Gaeilge, agus le Gaeilge, agus ansin le Gaeilge, agus faoi dheireadh le
Gaeilge, chun ár gcuspóirí faoi Ghaeilge a shroicheadh. Ní
rachfaimid ar strae arís. / Therefore, we're working on how to
bring these goals down to the present day in the language of our present day.
Meanwhile, as you have told me, let anyone who has interest in our
organization note that the events and actions of our Society will deal
with Gaeilge, and with Gaeilge, and then with Gaeilge, and in the end with
Gaeilge, in order to reach our goals about Gaeilge. We will not go
astray again.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh do bhur dtreoireacha ar
an ábhar seo. / Thank you for your instructions on this
matter.

PHILO-CELTIC SOCIETY OF NEW YORK
RE / RÉ: CUSPÓIRÍ DO CHUMANN CARAD NA
GAEILGE NUA EABHRAIC /
GOALS FOR THE NEW YORK PHILO-CELTIC SOCIETY
A chairde / O friends
Anois go bhfuil ballraíocht arís ag Cumann
Carad Na Gaeilge Nua Eabhraic ó 7 Deireadh Fomháir 2004, caithfimid
smaoineamh ar chuspóirí. / Now that the New York Philo-Celtic
Society again has a membership since 7 October 2004, we have to think about
goals.
Mar tá a fhios agaibh, ní raibh cuspóirí
deimhnithe, cinnte, áirithe, soiléire ar leith ag Cumann Carad Na
Gaeilge sna 1940s nó deich mbliain ó shin nuair a ndearna ár gcara Séamus
Ó Maoláin triall chun an Cumann a chur ar ais le chéile. / As
you know, the Philo-Celtic Society did not have definite, certain,
special, clear goals in the 1940s or 10 years ago when our friend Jim
Mullin tried to put the Society back together.
Agus gan chuspóirí, chuaigh an Cumann síos
go picnicí amháin as Sacsbhéarla amháin mar a ghníomh amháin.
/ And without goals, the Society sank to English-language picnics
as its only activity.
I bhfocail eile, gan chuspóirí, bhí fadhbanna
ag an gCumann a raibh sé i n-ann a sheachaint dá mbeadh cuspóirí
deimhnithe, cinnte, soiléire aige. / In other words, without
goals, the Society had problems which it could have avoided if it would have
had definite, specific, clear goals.
An raibh cuspóir nó cuspóirí ag an gCumann
ar dtús nuair a bunaíodh é? / Did the Society have a goal or goals
at first when it was founded?
Tá taighde á dhéanamh agam le breis agus cúpla
mí anois ar Chumann Carad Na Gaeilge a fháil amach a raibh aon chuspóir
deimhnithe, cinnte, soiléir foilsithe acu ar dtús, ar an gcéad lá.
/ I've been doing research for more than the last couple of months to
find out if they had any definite, certain, clear, published goal right up
front on the first day.
Ní féidir liom aon fhianaise a fháil go
raibh. / I can't find any evidence that they had.
Bhunaigh Mícheál Ó Lócháin an chéad "Philo-Celtic
Class" i Scoil Mhuire i mBrúiclinn i 1872 chun Gaeilge a mhúineadh.
Tá sé seo roimh go raibh an Cumann ann. / Mícheál
Ó Lócháin founded the first "Philo-Celtic Class" in St. Mary's
School in Brooklyn in 1872 to teach Irish. This is before the Society
existed.
Ansin, bunaíodh an chéad Cumann Carad Na
Gaeilge i mBoston i mí Bealtaine 1873. / Then, the first Philo-Celtic
Society was founded in Boston in May 1873.
Ansin, ag deireadh na bliana 1874, bhunaigh Mícheál
Ó Lócháin agus a chairde Cumann Cairde Na Gaeilge Bhrúiclinn. /
Then, at the end of 1874, Mícheál Ó Lócháin and his friends founded the
Brooklyn Philo-Celtic Society.
Ansin, bhunaigh a chairde i Manhattan ár
gcraobh/cumann féin i 1878, .i. Cumann Carad Na Gaeilge Nua Eabhraic.
/ Then, his friends in Manhattan founded our own branch/society
in 1878, i.e., The Philo-Celtic Society Of New York.
Cinnte gur bhunaigh Mícheál Ó Lócháin an "Philo-Celtic
Class" chun Gaeilge a mhúineadh, ach ní féidir liom luadh nó
tagairt a fháil ar chuspóirí don gCumann nó dosna Cumainn sa tréimhse
sin. (Feictear go raibh na "Cumainn" an-neamhspleách
ar a chéile.) / Certainly Mícheál Ó Lócháin founded the
"Philo-Celtic Class" to teach Irish, but I can't find mention
or reference about goals for the Society or Societies in that period.
(It looks like the Societies were very independent of each other.)
I gcomparáid, bhí cuspóir maith soiléir ag
New York Society For The Preservation Of The Irish Language nuair a bunaíodh
i 1878 (?): / In comparison, the New York Society For The
Preservation Of The Irish Language had a good clear objective when it was
founded in 1878(?):
"THIS SOCIETY is instituted to promote the
study of the Irish Language; to PRESERVE it as a spoken tongue; to encourage
the study and dissemination of IRISH LITERATURE; to cultivate and practice
the NATIONAL MUSIC OF IRELAND, and to establish in the City of New York an
IRISH LITERARY INSTITUTE."
Ach caithfimid fanacht go dtí 1881 roimh
gur féidir linn feiceáil go raibh Ó Lócháin ag iarraidh an fhadhb a
cheartú (.i., ganntanas cuspóra shoiléir) leis a iris nua dhátheangach
"An Gaodhal". / But we have to wait until 1881 before
we can see that Ó Lócháin was trying to correct the problem (i.e.,
lack of a clear goal) with his new bi-lingual magazine "The
Gael" (The Gaelic Irish Person).
Bhunaigh Ó Lócháin an iris seo do Chumann
Carad Na Gaeilge Bhrúiclinn i 1881 ach ba ghearr roimh go mba leis féin é.
/ He founded this journal for the Brooklyn Philo-Celtic Society but he
soon became its owner.
Sa chéad eagrán, d'fhoilsigh sé an cuspóir
seo don iris: "teanga na hÉireann a chosnughadh, a
haithbheodhughadh agus a chleachdughadh a measg Clann na nGaodhal."
/ In the first edition, he published this objective for the magazine:
"the language of Ireland to protect, to revive, and to use amongst the
Children of the Gaeil."
Agus seo daoibh na manaí ('mottoes') a bhí ar
an gclúdach go rialta ó Feabhra 1882 ar aghaidh i nGaeilge agus i Sacsbhéarla:
/ And here's the mottoes which were regularly on the cover from February
1882 forward:
"An Gaodhal, Leabhar-aithris míosamhal
tabhartha chum an Teanga Ghaedhilge a chosnadh agus a shaorthugadh, agus
chum Féin-riaghla Cinidh na hÉireann." / The Gael, a Monthly
Journal devoted to the Preservation and Cultivation of the Irish Language
and the Autonomy of the Irish Nation."
I 1884, tá tagairt faoi dheireadh againn
(i "An Gaodhal") ar chuspóir do Chumann Carad Na Gaeilge Bhrúiclinn
é féin, ach is cosúil go raibh an capall (nó an picnic) as an
scioból cheana féin: / In 1884, we finally have a reference
(in "An Gaodhal") to a goal for Brooklyn Philo-Celtic itself,
but it's likely the horse (or the picnic) was already out of the barn:
"This society shall have for its object the
preservation and extension of the Irish as a spoken language."
(M'aistriúchán: Beidh mar chuspóir ag an gCumann seo caomhnú agus fairsingiú
na Gaeilge mar theanga labhartha.)
I 1886, scríobh Ó Lócháin, "Ní chun
mionscrúdú a dhéanamh ar an teanga féin a bunaíodh 'An Gaodhal' ach
chun an teanga a chraobhscaoileadh agus a chaomhnú." /
" 'An Gael' was not founded to do a minute study on the language itself
but to broadcast and protect the language."
Agus i 1896, ag plé ar ghluaiseacht na Gaeilge
i Meiriceá, dúirt Ó Lócháin: / And in 1896, discussing the Irish
language movement in America, Ó Lócháin said:
".... the object of the Gaelic movement is
- and has been - the revival and the reintroduction of the Gaelic as the
spoken language of Ireland with English as an accompaniement."
Feictear gur cineál réamhfhéachaint é seo ar
dhátheangachas an tréimhse inniu. / This seems like a
kind of prediction of the bilingualism of today.
Ar aon chuma, lig dom cúpla smaoineamh eile
a chur romhaibh. / At any rate, let me put another couple of thoughts
before you.
Ag am Uí Lócháin, ní raibh ach meán
cumarsáide amháin ar fáil - an cló-phreas. Ach inniu, tá a lán
meáin chumarsáide a chur chun cinn aon chuspóir atá fiúntach. /
At the time of Ó Lócháin, there was only one media available - the
printing press. But today, there are a lot of media to put towards
success any worthwhile goal.
Ach ar dtús, lig dúinn plé an cuspóir nó
na cuspóirí atá ag teastáil uaibh. Tiocfaidh straitéis agus
taicticí i ndiaidh sin. / But first, let's discuss the goal or
goals you want. Strategy and tactics will follow that.
Go raibh maith agaibh / Thank you. -
