CUMANN CARAD NA GAEILGE
The Philo-Celtic Society

Is sinne Cumann Carad na Gaeilge.  Sa 19ú haois, nuair a bunaíodh
ár gcumann, ba í "grá na Gaeilge" an chiall do "Philo-Celtic" i measc
na nGael i Meiriceá.

Thosaigh Mícheál Ó Lócháin ár ngníomhaíochtaí le ranganna Gaeilge
i mBrúiclinn i 1872 agus ár n-iris "An Gaodhal" i 1881, agus sa dóigh
sin bhunaigh sé an ghluaiseacht Ghaeilge i Meiriceá.  Idir 1872 agus
1893, d'fhás ár n-eagraíocht, ár gcraobhacha, agus cumainn
neamhspleácha le "Philo-Celtic" orthu ar fud Mheiriceá. Tugadh "The
Gaelic League" ar ár ranganna.  Tháinig Dubhghlas de hÍde go Nua
Eabhrac chun ár n-eagraíocht agus ár ranganna a fheiceáil i 1891.  I
1893, bhain sé áis as ár gCumann mar a shamhail chun Conradh na
Gaeilge a bhunú in Éirinn.  An ghlúin ar mhúin Conradh na Gaeilge
dóibh idir 1893 agus 1916, ba í an ghlúin í sin a chuaigh chun tosaigh
i dtionscnamh stáit nua-aimseartha na hÉireann.

Fuair Mícheál Ó Lócháin bás i 1899.  Scoir foilsitheoireacht "An
Gaodhal" i 1904.  Mheathlaigh ár n-eagraíocht tríd an fichiú haois.
Ach táimid ar ais anois, ag obair do athbheochan na Gaeilge ar fud
an domhain agus a haththionscnamh mar theanga labhartha bheo na
hÉireann le Sacsbhéarla mar thionlacan.  Má's maith leat oibriú linn,
téigh i dteagmháil linn.

Le gach dea-ghuí,

We are The Philo-Celtic Society.  In the 19th century, when our
society was founded, the meaning of 'Philo-Celtic' for the Gaeil in
America was "love of the Irish language".

Mícheál Ó Lócháin started our activities with Irish language classes in
Brooklyn in 1872 and our magazine "An Gaodhal" in 1881, and in
that way he founded the Irish Language movement in America.
Between 1872 and 1893, our organization, our branches, and
independent "Philo-Celtic" societies grew throughout America.  Our
classes were called "The Gaelic League."  Douglas Hyde came to
New York to see our organization and our classes in 1891.  In 1893,
he used our organization and our classes as his model to found The
Gaelic League in Ireland.  The generation which The Gaelic League
taught between 1893 and 1916, that was the generation which led in
the establishment of the modern state of Ireland.

Mícheál Ó Lócháin died in 1899.  "An Gaodhal" ceased publication in
1904.  Our organization declined through the 20th century.  But
we're back, working for the renaissance of the Irish language
throughout the world and its re-establishment as the living spoken
language of Ireland with English as an accompaniment.  If you want
to work with us, contact us.
